Never Stop Loving the Game: Kobi Rees' Rugby Story

Kobi Rees, a flanker at Newport RFC, who has been making his mark for the iconic club. However, for Rees rugby is more than a game, it is entirety. A relationship perfectly interwoven, blossoming over time. A story of passion and hard work, it is a great one, let’s dive in.

The beginning

“Rugby isn’t just a game to me. It has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Ever since I could walk, I’ve always had a rugby ball in my hands. Heading down to the field with my old man every weekend was part of our routine, and we’d spend countless hours practising the basics, which I believe are the foundation of anyone’s game. I think anyone who’s been involved in rugby will tell you it’s all about mindset. I’ve had more setbacks than I can count, but it’s my love for the game that has always brought me back stronger.”

Like many young players across this rugby nation, sharpening his craft on a weekend became a ritual for Rees. Early on his path he put in hard yards to build a formidable foundation, rugby has been consistent presence throughout his live. Through the tough times that’s when his love for the game shone through. From a young age his talent was clear.

Dragons academy and Ebbw Vale

The Dragons recognised his potential and offered him a valuable first taste of the professional environment. It was a formative experience, and one he now reflects on as an important chapter in his rugby journey.

“Being part of the Dragons Academy was a dream come true. Training in a professional environment not only improved my game but also opened my eyes to what it truly takes to become a professional rugby player. Representing the Dragons in a pre-season game against Hartpury was a massive opportunity. It gave me the chance to perform on a bigger stage and experience the physicality, endurance and skill level of the professional game. It was an experience I learned a huge amount from.”

Throughout his time at the academy, he also suited up for Ebbw Vale, another brilliant that Rees credits a lot for his learning.

“Playing for Ebbw Vale was a privilege. Being there while I was with the Dragons was a fantastic learning experience. I spent a lot of my time coming off the bench, but the lessons I took from that period were invaluable. Ebbw Vale’s direct, forward-dominated style of rugby maybe wasn’t the way I naturally preferred to play, but adapting to that style taught me a great deal and ultimately made me a better all-round player.”

Newport

Last season, Rees joined Newport, as they were getting ready to defend their crown. It was another solid season season for Ty Morris side, who made to semi-final. Rees was consistent presence in many big matchups including a memorable contest against Pontypool at Rodney Parade. It hasn’t taken long for Rees to get settled with the team.

“Newport has quickly become a home for me. The togetherness of the players, along with the incredible support from the fans, has had a huge impact on me. Signing for such a historic club was a real honour. It was an up-and-down first season, with some time out of the matchday squad along the way, but I wouldn’t change any of it. The development I made over the course of the season was probably the biggest of my career so far, and it’s something I’m determined to build on this year.”

When asked about his future ambitions, Rees answer was clear, and sums up what rugby is all about.

“My ambitions for the future always come back to the same message I’d give any young player. Never stop loving the game. There’s so much pressure on young players these days that it’s easy to lose sight of why you started playing in the first place. I’m looking forward to a strong season with Newport this year, and who knows what the future might hold. For now, my focus is on continuing to enjoy my rugby, improving every day and seeing where that takes me.”

For Rees, success is measured by more than results. It is about growth, enjoyment and building an even deeper connection with the game he loves. That passion will continue to drive him as he embraces every challenge that lies ahead.
