Gethyn Cannon: "I'm Really Excited to Represent Newport"

“I’m really excited about playing for Newport. It’s a club with a huge history. I also know a lot of boys who either play for Newport or have played for the club, and they’ve all said what a great club it is. That makes me even more excited to have the opportunity to represent Newport.”
Gethyn Cannon has arrived at Newport. The lock is embarking on a new challenge after graduating from Cardiff Met. He will head to Newport and now ply his trade in the Super Rygbi Cymru. Cannon looks to make a big impact and show what he can do in a new proving ground.
Lessons from Cardiff Met
Recently, Cannon has been sharpening his craft on the pitches of Cyncoed. A familiar face to Super BUCS and Welsh Premiership watchers, Cardiff Met provided the perfect place for his game to develop. The former Archer talks about the lessons he learnt at Met.
“With Cardiff Met becoming more of a professional environment, it really taught me the standards you need to maintain in training, off the pitch and in the gym. Bringing those standards with me to Newport will definitely benefit me and help me settle into the environment.”
He also elaborated on the biggest lesson he learnt throughout his career so far.
“I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stay disciplined and keep putting the hard work in. There have been plenty of times when I’ve been disappointed or frustrated, but staying disciplined has helped me keep pushing forward. Eventually, that hard work pays off with great opportunities.”
Since I last spoke to Cannon, he has had a big opportunity with a Premiership club.
A game at The Stoop
His performances and talent didn’t go unnoticed, as he got the opportunity to play at The Stoop against Japan U19s, where he made a cameo off the bench. He speaks about that experience.
“It was a great experience. Even though I was only there for a short time, it gave me a real insight into a professional environment. Being able to play at The Stoop was unreal, as it’s such a top-quality stadium.”
There is no doubt that Cannon would have learnt a tremendous amount from that experience. However, his attention now turns to the SRC.
Arriving in the SRC
“I’m really looking forward to the excitement of playing in a new league. Having the opportunity to play against some of the best clubs in Wales is something I’ve always wanted to do, and I think this is the perfect time for me to take that step.”
A true breeding ground for Wales’ most promising talent. Cannon will pursue high-quality performances in the SRC and look to make a massive impact for Newport. For him, it’s all about building on momentum.
“For me, it’s about earning the opportunity to represent Newport and carrying on the form I showed last season. Last year was a really positive one for me, and if I can take those performances into the SRC with Newport, I think it’ll put me in a really good position. My main goal is to maintain the performance levels I finished with at Cardiff Met.”
Cannon has all the attributes to enjoy a memorable season in the black and amber of Newport. If he can produce his best rugby, he has every chance of becoming one of the club’s standout performers.
