Cheltenham Town captain Sean Long on his ambitions with the club and an unforgettable game against Man City

Long said “It would be great to achieve more things at Cheltenham” this quote sums up Cheltenham town captain ambitions for his club

When asked about the playing in different leagues and the quality that comes with playing in higher leagues, Long had this to say

“Probably the quality of player you’re coming up against and the detail that goes into the tactics of the other teams”. He also went on to say that the national league has less resource than the leagues above.

Next Long was asked about the retirement of his teammate Matty Blair and how he will be missed by the team.

“Yeah, Matty is brilliant I think you seen everywhere now how nice of a person he is. I used to slag him saying he was too nice, but Matty will be a big miss in the changing room.

“Obviously on the pitch he drove standards as well, and all you can do now is wish him the best and congrats on a brilliant career.”

When talking about Cheltenham Town’s tough start to the season and the drastic change in form. Long was asked the reason for this change of form.

“I think we just stuck to the process, it’s a new group.”

Due to the pandemic football games we forced to play behind closed doors. Long was asked how this affect whilst playing.

“It was a bit weird I think what helped us is we really had something to fight for, so we didn’t really need a crowd to get motivated, obviously it would have been helpful to have the them there.”

When asked about what he would like to achieve at Cheltenham this season and long term at the club. Long had this to say

“It would be a big achievement to stay in the league, its not going to be easy with the teams we are going up against.”

This what the captain said he would like to achieve in the long term

“It would be great to achieve more things at Cheltenham.”

“To give more success back to the club.”

When asked about his thoughts about the Ireland and if he has any ambitions to break into the squad. This is what Long had to say

“ No I think if you look at the Ireland squad now, there are a lot of players playing in league one and lower down the leagues so there is a massive opportunity there to be call up, yeah it would obviously be nice to be called up but if it doesn’t happen it doesn’t happen.”

When ask about a potential cup run. Long had this to say

“ Yeah its always nice to go on a cup run, you can see what type of reward you can get.”

“ You might get a Man City or Man Utd, it gives lads a chance to play and too make some changes.”
