3 Opponents that could be good option for McGregor’s return

The notorious one has been side-lined with an injury since January 2021. Fans are eagerly waiting for an announcement about the former double champion’s return. With a 2023 return looking more likely let’s have a look at some potential opponents for McGregor.

Jorge Masvidal

Masvidal and McGregor could be seen as the two biggest names in the sport. They both are outstanding on the feet, and the two of them both having quick knockouts to their name. With McGregor having a knockout of Jose Aldo inside of 10 seconds. Furthermore, Masvidal owns the fastest knockout. Which was over Ben Askren with that famous flying knee. It would be a good option for McGregor because there is no threat of the fight going to the ground. This is because Masvidal isn’t known for being the best when it comes to grappling. The reason this is good for McGregor is that the majority of his losses in MMA have come from better grapplers. You can see this in his first loss in the UFC when he lost by submission to Nate Diaz. This suggests McGregor won’t have to worry about being taken down. This could mean his performance will look like the  old McGregor. Finally, this would be a fan favourite fight and one of the biggest fights in UFC history.

Tony Ferguson

Even though the two were at the top of the division at a similar time, they never met inside the Octagon. When you look at the two fighters recent form, they are both coming off a few losses. With both fighters looking like they want to fight at welterweight it seems the right time for them to meet When you look at how the fight could play out, it could turn out to be a great. The reason for this is both men like to stay on the feet when fighting. Yet, unlike Masvidal, Ferguson has the threat of his grappling. Ferguson’s grappling would level out the fight. This is because McGregor has the better and cleaner striking. Ferguson is the better grappler because of his jiu-jujitsu. This could make it appealing for the UFC to make because they are two legendary fighters. Which means it would great to see them square off.

Dustin Poirier

When McGregor and Poirier meet fireworks happen. The three times these fighters have met in the Octagon the fight never made it to a third round. Even though they have fought three times, I don’t think fans would complain if they were given a fourth. The reason for this is the third had an underwhelming end. McGregor was unable to answer the call for the second round due to a leg break. It would be interesting to see what adjustments the fighters make. From a business point of view, it would be a no brainer to make this fight again. Money talks and the last two fights were some of the biggest in the company’s history.

It is safe to say no matter who McGregor fights people will watch.
