Three Scots Who Should Be on the British and Irish Lions Tour to Australia
The British and Irish Lions tour is only a year away, and discussions about who Andy Farrell will select are well underway. There is a tremendous amount of talent coming from all four nations. However, Scotland will likely have more players in the squad than in previous tours because the nation has been playing exceptionally well in recent years. Even though a handful of players could be selected to go Down Under, there are three players in particular who should be going to Australia.
Finn Russell
Finn Russell should be the first name on the list when picking players to go to Australia. The fly-half is a magician with a rugby ball and is one of today's best players. He has been playing well for Bath and Scotland and hopes to go on another Lions tour next year. His vision of the rugby pitch makes him unique, as he can easily unlock an attack. However, his defensive abilities are often overlooked, as he is one of the best defensive tens in rugby. It will be interesting to see who Farrell will select at ten, as there is so much talent in that position, with Jack Crowley, Marcus Smith, and George Ford all vying for it. Russell looks to be a clear favourite, as you would be hard-pressed to find a better fly-half than the Scotsman.
Sione Tuipulotu
Sione Tuipulotu is one of the most physical centres in the game today. The Scottish international has been in phenomenal form for club and country and is crucial in any team he is a part of. Tuipulotu was a big reason why the Glasgow Warriors secured the URC title. The physicality he brings is imposing, and in today's game, it is one of the most crucial attributes for an inside centre. Furthermore, he would suit Farrell's rugby style as he has many attributes similar to those of Ireland centre Bundee Aki. It will be interesting to see who will be the starting 12 next year. Most likely, it will depend on who the starting 10 is.
Blair Kinghorn
The Scotsman is a very underrated player who often doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He is an all-rounder, as he can cover many positions, which would be handy for the Lions. Blair Kinghorn has always been a great player, but the fullback has come into his own since he joined Toulouse. He helped the club capture the Champions Cup and is one of the best players on the French side. He couldn’t show his full potential in the Six Nations in a Scotland jersey due to injuries. However, you can’t get much better at fullback when fully fit than Kinghorn. Another asset in his quiver is that he is a very competent goal kicker, which Kinghorn proved in the Champions Cup final.
As the Lions tour is only a year away, it will be interesting to see who gets selected for the historic team.
