Even though it was a great fight for fans to watch, you felt like Gaethje wanted to secure a knockout. Former middleweight champion Bisping said that's what cost him a win. The Englishman explained this when speaking on the TNT Sports postfight show.

"He was a victim of his success. He knocked out Dustin Poirier. Everyone is riding his coattails and being his fan for obvious reasons. He's an inspiring and accomplished fighter. He thought he was going to go right through Max Holloway. He did, and he was looking for the knockout. You can't do that. When you're looking for the knockout, you telegraph the shot.

He was swinging with everything he had, and Gaetje wasn't setting it up. Other than throwing hooks, he was just throwing leg kicks. Step aside, left hook, Larry. Leg kick, Larry; that's what we'll call Justin Gaethje. Listen, you know, he learned a very, very valuable lesson because he didn't have to take this fight. He was the next contender for Islam Makhachev. He was the rightful contender for the lightweight title that went up in flames."
